DESCRIPTION:Historically prized for flavor and versatility\, apples have long been a staple cultivar in the United States. \nLocal varieties once offered sustenance that spanned the seasons – from simple summer varieties to full-flavored fall fruit to “keepers” that could be stashed away until spring. Even those less-than-perfect made stellar cider that lasted the year. \nToday\, supermarkets stock only a few varieties\, favoring apples that travel well and are uniform and visually appealing. Of the thousands of documented apple varieties that grow in the United States\, 15 kinds make up 90 percent of what’s available to consumers. \nCome by the Dining Center to learn about regional apple varieties and to taste some special Applefest menu items.
